The taps offered in this listing were all made by the Elgin Watch Co, many decades ago. The table below describes details of the taps listed in the pull-down menu above. Order the taps you want from the pull-down list. Elgin taps used a common shank diameter of .081in (2.06mm). Taps were sold in sets as shown in one of the photos (the set is not part of this auction). Each tap in the set was identified by a size stamped on the side of the shank, as visible in several of the photos. You may have one of these sets with missing or broken taps. Taps in the list are exact replacements, including the factory-stamped size on the tap shank. In most cases you can also purchase an identical sized tap that does not have the size stamped on the shank for a far cheaper price. In both cases, the actual tapping part were both manufactured by Elgin; the only difference is the stamping on the shank. For one size (.0208in), I am also offering unmounted factory-made taps at a considerably cheaper price per lot of 10 taps. You can mount these taps in any diameter shank of your choice. These are New-Old-Stock (NOS) taps that perfectly match Elgin screws used in 18s-12s pocket watches and many wrist models as well. They may also match screw sizes used in other makes of watches including Hamilton, Illinois, Hampden, Waltham, and others. All of these mounted Elgin taps can be held in a tap holder used in a staking set anvil (see separate listing). Use of the holder insures that the tapped hole will be straight and erect. The holder and anvil are not part of this auction. The US penny shown in one of the photos shows a nicely tapped hole in one of the zeros on the penny. Some notes: · Each tap will be packaged individually in a labelled container. · The .0208in tap size is especially useful for rethreading jewel screw holes in many sizes of 18s-12s PW. · The .0208in (.52mm) tap is a good replacement for the .5mm tap sold by Bergeon. When purchased as a lot of 10 unmounted taps, each tap costs $.30. The Bergeon tap is phenomenally more expensive. · These are carbon steel taps. Like any tap, they can be broken if used with excessive force. That may be the reason why you are replacing bad or missing taps in your set. Use them carefully. · The Elgin materials Catalog (available online) lists all screws and corresponding taps used in Elgin watches. · Some of the tap sizes are in short supply.
