This is best used as a preliminary test in conjunction with test acids or a gold tester or to verify the hallmark.To use, simply place the magnet near the piece you are testing. If a non-precious metal is detected, the piece will be pulled toward the magnet. Precious metals are not magnetic and pure precious metals should not be pulled toward the magnet.
