This listing is for a classic ladies split shank halo design ring featuring an oval natural ruby surrounded by12 genuine, natural diamonds. First a note on rubies. As a Graduate Gemologist, I can say that identification of a natural ruby versus a high-quality created ruby is one of the more difficult identifications a gemologist routinely makes. Identification of inexpensive flame fusion synthetic rubies is one of the easiest identifications we make. Still, the most common synthetic gemstone that is submitted for identification to the Gemological Institute of America’s lab by jewelers is a flame fusion synthetic ruby! Further, the trade assumes that all natural rubies are heat treated unless they are accompanied by a lab certificate or seller guarantee that they are untreated. A biproduct of this heat treatment is that flux from the process fills surface breaking flaws and improves clarity; the trade accepts this as long as the effects are minor. To further complicate matters, there are ruby-glass composite stones where major parts of a natural ruby are glass filled; the trade considers these to be simulated rubies. There are many honest sellers on eBay, but there are also many who misrepresent their gems; either out of dishonesty or out of ignorance (and many of these sellers have good feedback ratings). Don’t depend on eBay to police these sellers; they don’t have the manpower or the expertise. Caveat emptor (buyer beware)! This particular natural ruby is a beautiful, bright stone that exhibits a medium dark, strong, slightly purplish red color. The gemstone has good, eye-clean clarity, and is well-cut. It measures 5.1 x 4.0 mm with an estimated weight of 0.36 carat. This gem was heat treated in the usual manner with a minor amount of flux healing but is 100% genuine and natural. Ruby is July’s birthstone, but this ring is a joy to own and wear regardless of your birth month! The ruby is surrounded by 12 round, full brilliant cut, natural and unenhanced diamonds. The diamonds average 1.3 mm in diameter with an estimated weight of 0.12 carat. These diamonds provide a nice white contrast and really bring out the color of the ruby. They certainly “face up” better than their actual grade of K/L color and I-2 clarity with good overall cut. The diamonds are 100% genuine, natural, untreated and unenhanced. The ring is by Shiv Imports; our store developed a great relationship with this company over the course of many years. The firm manufactured products in India, and the value was always just incredible! This ring is Shiv style number 522RR, and it weighs a respectable 2.9 grams (over $140 just in gold melt value as we write this!). The ring is 9.3 mm in width at its widest point at the top. The ring is currently finger size 6 but is easily sizable by any competent jeweler. This ring is solid gold and unworn; don’t be duped into buying a cheap gold-plated ring or someone else’s worn-out castoff! This ring was originally priced at $895 in our brick and mortar fine jewelry store that closed in 2020.
